Online poker as a learning tool

For the aspiring poker player the boom in internet poker has provided the best learning tool available. Of course the chips aren’t real. And the poker table is just pixels. But because of this an important part has been removed from the equation that will help you focus on certain areas. This of course being the physical presence of the other players.

The reason why this is good is because it provides an opportunity to just flat out learn about the hands without as much pressure. You won’t be focused on the colorful clay poker chip stack of the player next to you. Or be worried about what information your expressions may be giving away while you sit there nervously shuffling a clay poker chip amongst your fingers.

It’s also an opportunity to learn at your own budget. Unlike in Las Vegas chip stacks can be purchased for just about any denomination, even for free. So if you haven’t yet give it a try. You may even just accumulate enough loyalty points to earn yourself a clay chip set or two!

Never look at the flop

A very powerful habit to implement is making sure that you never see the flop. Obviously, at some point you will need to see the flop in order to make your flop action. What I am referring to is making sure you never see the actual moment the flop is revealed. I’ve been in many a tense pre flop situation against good players. When I have position it feels great when I know they are looking for my reaction to the flop before they act, and they never get it! To make sure I don’t forget this I keep my lucky chip with me. This chip sits on my cards while I play and serves as my reminder. Simple, but it works!

This same technique also is very important from another angle. When I am not watching the flop come down, I am watching others watch it. Surprisingly I’ve found that I rarely find anybody that doesn’t watch that moment when the three cards are to be laid out. Once one sees the same player react to multiple flops the meaning of what they are seeing will become clearer and clearer. Implement this habit and you will gain mountains of information. You will give off limited information. Your decisions will be clearer and more confident in building your Texas Holdem chip stack.

The Popularity of Texas Hold ‘Em

Recently, Texas Hold’ Em has become the single most-played poker game in casinos, poker clubs and on online poker sites. Because of the three community cards that every player gets to see, there are less variables in work during each hand, which makes it seem like a more predictable poker game.

The highly televised World Series of Poker and the very popular TV show Celebrity Poker Showdown have also made it a more approachable poker game. Viewers learn the game and become comfortable with the rules as they watch. The successful poker players on the World Series of Poker, for example, have become celebrities in their own right and have further popularized the game.

In Texas Holdem Chip Away For the Details

Being observational is key to accumulate poker chips. What I find is that focusing on this area for me morphs poker from a card game into a people game. It adds a fun dimension. I have found a good way to discipline myself on this is to never look at my cards until it is my turn. Instead, I watch each individual player as action moves around the table towards myself. If you do this your brain has no choice but to subconsciously store the information in the memory banks. This technique is actually two fold. It helps you pick up on more data. It also prevents anyone who acts before you to see your reaction to your cards.

One would be surprised at the volume of information that can be derived by simply watching an opponents eyes or how they handle a clay chip. I have found that the biggest pots I have won were not because I had AA or KK. They were because I had observed something particular about an opponent and then I exploited that at the right time. Master this skill and your cards literally will not matter. Ironically in the long run you will find that this skill learned at the game of poker will be even more beneficial to one in the game of life.

The poker minded entrepreneur

For those who are looking to start a business, learning and utilizing the skills that make a successful poker player could be a recipe for success. Many entrepreneurs also find success at the poker table. This is due to the application of solid business fundamentals. Things like being able to assess the risk of losing their clay chips in particular. Or being able to assess the context of the table they are at.

Not only are the technical aspects important. Successful poker and business both require the ability to interact well with others from both an interpersonal and strategic standpoint. Creatively devising a strategy to acquire your opponents chips before the end of the game is similar to the thought process a successful salesman goes through to close the sale.

Poker can also be a great crash course for a budding entrepreneur to appreciate the value of a dollar once they’ve seen their poker chip stack disappear across the table one too many times. In just one trip to Las Vegas chip losses could serve as a type of mutated business school “tuition”. A very good lesson for success!
